Seven people have been killed following an attack by armed bandits on Magajin Wando village in Dandume Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The incident occurred late Friday night between 11:00 p.m. and midnight when the attackers stormed the community.

According to Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu Danmusa, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, members of the Community Watch Corps (CWC) responded swiftly and repelled the assault, preventing what he described as “a far more devastating outcome” for residents.

In the course of evacuating the injured, the victims and their escorts were ambushed by the same bandits who had split into groups. The commissioner explained that the assailants opened fire, riddling the vehicle with bullets and setting it ablaze. Despite the setback, the CWC managed to escape the ambush after a fierce gun duel.

Dr. Danmusa said preliminary reports suggest the ambush was a reprisal by the bandits after many of their members were killed during the repel in Magajin Wando.

“The government commends the bravery and sacrifice of the Community Watch Corps for their prompt response and their continued commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities under very dangerous conditions,” the commissioner stated.

He extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a quick recovery, assuring that the state government is working with the military, police, and other security agencies to track down those responsible.

He further called on residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies, stressing that the government remains resolute in dismantling criminal networks threatening peace in the state.
